Math Terms Range

Introduction of math terms range:

In mathematics, the range of a function refers to the output of a function, but there is not universal agreement on the subject of whether the output is the range or is included in the range. This disagreement among mathematicans is illustrated by the function y = x2. Some books say that both the domain and range of this function is the set of all real numbers. These books call the actual output of the function the image. This is the current usage for range in computer science.

Definition of math terms range:

The range of a group of value is the difference between the largest  and smallest values in the group.

Examples for math terms range:

The math terms range example problems are given as follows:

Example 1:

Chandru  took 6 science tests in one marking time period. What is the range of his test marks?

87,  71,  82,  89,  85,  75

Solution:

Arranging  the test marks from smallest  to largest, we have:

71,  75,  82,  85,  87,  89

largest - lowest = 89 - 71 = 18.

Answer is:   The range of these test marks is 18 points.

Example 2:

The jana family members drove through 5 cities on their vacation. Fuel cost varied from city to city. What is the range of fuel costs?

$1.77,  $1.59,  $1.94,  $2.07,  $1.82

Solution:

Arranging  the value from smallest to largest, we have:
$1.59,  $1.77,  $1.82,  $1.94,  $2.07

largest - smallest = $2.07 - $1.59 = $0.48

Answer is:   The range of fuel costs is $0.48.

Practice problems for math terms range:

The math terms range practical problems are given as follow:

Example 3:

Ms. Karan scheduled  8 numbers on the note-book. What is the range of that numbers?

12,  -10,  5,  -2,  -3,  -5,  15,  -9.

Solution:

Ordering the data from smallest  to largest, we have:
-10,  -9,  -5,  -3,   -2,  5,  12,  15

Largest - smallest = 17 - -10 = 17 + +10 = +34

Answer:   The range of these numbers  +34.

Example 4:

A running race was finished by 4 players. What is the range of times given in hours below?

2.5 hr,  8.1 hr,  3.3 hr, 4.7 hr

Solution:

Arranging the data from smallest  to largest, we have:

2.5,  3.5,  4.7,  8.1

highest - lowest = 8.1 hr - 2.5 hr = 5.6 hr

Answer:   The range of running  times is 5.6 hr.
