Find the Range of Numbers

How to find the range of Numbers

Statistics deals with numerical facts systematically collected with some definite object in view, in any field of enquiry, whatsoever of observation, measurement or experiment. Statistical is a technique used to obtain, analyze, summaries, compare and present the numerical data or statistics. Difference between the greatest value and lowest value in the data set is called as range of the data set. for example, if 76 is the largest value and 12 is the lowest value in the data set then 76 - 12 = 64 is the range. Examples on finding the Range of Numbers

Example 1: Find the range of numbers: {20, 20, 25, 36, 65, 34, 39}

Solution:

Arrange the numbers in ascending order {20, 20, 25, 34, 36, 39, 65}

Range      = Greatest value – Lowest value

= 65 – 20

= 45

Therefore range is 45.

Example 2: Find the range for the following series of numbers 25, 26, 27, 28, 35, 37, 49, 36, 58

Solution:

Arrange the numbers in ascending order {25, 26, 27, 28, 35, 36, 37, 49, 58}

Range      = Greatest value – Lowest value

= 58 – 25

= 33

Therefore range is 33.

Example 3: A students secured marks as follows; 56, 75, 85, 69, 78 in five subjects. Find the range.

Solution:

Arrange the marks in ascending order {56, 69, 75, 78, 85}

Range      = Greatest value – Lowest value

= 85 – 56

= 29

Therefore range is 29.

Example 4: Suppose a man spent 25, 30, 40, 15, 34, 52 dollars for past last six weekends respectively. Find the range of amount he spent.

Solution:

Arrange the amount he spent in ascending order {15, 25, 30, 34, 40, 52}

Range      = Greatest value – Lowest value

= 52 – 15

= 37

Therefore range is 37 dollars.

Example 5: In a class six students weight are 56, 65, 70, 90, 65, 78. Find the range of weight.

Solution:

Arrange the weights in ascending order {56, 65, 65, 70, 78, 90}

Range      = Greatest value – Lowest value

= 90 – 56

= 34

Therefore range is 34.
