Rounding Decimals to the Nearest Whole Number

Rounding:-

Rounding a numerical value means substitute it by another value that is almost equal but has a shorter and simpler. Rounding is repeatedly done on reason to attain a value that is simpler to write and handle easier than the original number. It may be done also to point toward the accuracy of a computed number; for instance, a quantity that was computed as 343,376 but is known to be accurate only to within a pair of hundred units is better stated as about 343,400.                                                                                                                 

Lets see the Basic rules that are necessary for preparation.

Rules for Rounding of Decimal Numbers to its Nearest Whole Numbers:-

Rule 1:-

If the digits in tenth place is any one of these five numbers  4, 3, 2, 1, 0 then leave the digit in ones place as it is and make all the digits after the decimal point as zero.

Rule 2:-

If the digits in tenth place is any one of these five numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 then add one to the digit in ones place and make all the digits after the decimal point as zero.


Solved Problems on Rounding Decimals to its Nearest Whole Number:-

Problem 1:-

Round the decimal number 350. 2134 to its nearest whole number

Solution:-

The given digit is 350.2134.

We have to round it to nearest whole number.

Here the number in tenth place is 2. So it comes under the category of rule 1.

By applying rule 1 make all the digits right side of decimal point as zero and leave the digit in ones place as it is.

Therefore the answer is 350.

Problem 2:-

Round the decimal number 350. 7134 to its nearest whole number

Solution:-

The given digit is 350.7134.

We have to round it to nearest whole number.

Here the number in tenth place is 7. So it comes under the category of rule 2.

By applying rule 2 make all the digits right side of decimal point as zero and add one to digit in ones place . ( 0 + 1 = 1)

Therefore the answer is 351.

Problem 3:-

Round the decimal number 34.34 to its nearest whole number

Solution:-

The given digit is 34.34

We have to round it to nearest whole number.

Here the number in tenth place is 3. So it comes under the category of rule 1.

By applying rule 1 make all the digits right side of decimal point as zero and leave the digit in ones place as it is.

Therefore the answer is 34.

Problem 4:-

Round the decimal number 34.86 to its nearest whole number

Solution:-

The given digit is 34.86

We have to round it to nearest whole number.

Here the number in tenth place is 8. So it comes under the category of rule 2.

By applying rule 2 make all the digits right side of decimal point as zero and add one to digit in ones place . ( 4 + 1 = 5)

Therefore the answer is 35.
